(RIA Novosti) MOSCOW, August 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will start an experimental program for preparation for flights to Mars in 2006, said Anatoly Perminov, head of the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos.
"The agency is not planning a manned flight to Mars until 2015, although we will start an experimental program at the Institute of Medical and Biological Research next year," he told the Voice of Russia state-controlled radio station. "An international six-men crew will conduct a simulated 500-day flight to Mars."
Russia is apparently leading the way when it comes towards space tourism as well as exploration of our solar system. While some of the more advanced nations are planning on revisiting the moon, Russia is not only setting it's eyes upon the red planet but is seriously considering using space tourism to fund the trek there and back. This should come to now surprise as it was Russia that introduced the world towards space tourism in the first place.
Perminov said the flights to the International Space Station offered by Roscosmos were safer than sub-orbital flights advertised in the United States.
Perminov also described Russia's plans for strategic development of space research and exploration.
Although this might seem as if Russia is considering the "go it alone" approach, Perminov actually admitted that international cooperation is necessary in order to achieve their objectives. Russia currently is building a new type of shuttle which will combine some of the reliability features from their Soyuz spacecraft with the comforts of the American Space Shuttle.
Although one wonders how Russia is going to achieve this compared to it's wealthier friends (Japan, America, Europe, etc.) but when it comes to space, Russia is not only the pioneer of the final frontier but also one of the few out there that is willing to take risks in order to acquire historical glory.
