Korea Clones Dog
[Media Source*]
(Zaman) South Korean scientist Woo Suk Hwang of the Seoul National University (SNU) has cloned many mammals before becoming the first in the world to clone a dog.
A team led by Hwang has cloned an Afghan hound. US scientist Gerald Schatten, who studied with Hwang for the project, said the 13 weeks old cloned dog was named "Snuppy", whose name stands for Seoul National University puppy, and is healthy, normal, lively and loves to go for walks.
Cloning these canines is no easy task, as dogs are considered one of the most difficult animals in the world to clone due to their reproductive cycle. Hwang is being hailed as a hero back in his homeland, and the government of South Korea is planning on investing $43 million towards Hwang's labs, as well as to help Hwang set up a stem cell bank worldwide.
In order to commemorate this "breakthrough" the South Korean government plans on commissioning stamps that will show the "hope" of Hwang's research. These stamps will depict an egg, a man in a wheelchair, the man rising and later on embracing a woman. Despite his recent success, it seems Hwang is keeping his distance away from human cloning and the debate that surrounds it.
"I firmly reject the term human cloning," Hwang said in an interview with Reuters in May. "This is a scientific activity called somatic nuclear transfer, and in no part does it involve the physiological process of fertilisation of eggs by sperm."
Although this latest breakthrough will probably be denounced by the Vatican and other elements of concern, hopefully scientists like Hwang will be able to steer the scientific community away from human cloning towards more promising arena's such as adult stem cell research. As science progresses in this area, more cures will become available to diseases that were considered "terminal" and perhaps bring healing for millions across the globe.
