BBC Journalists Going On Strike?
[Media Source*]
(EARTH TIMES) Gerry Morrissey, assistant general secretary of broadcasting and technicians union Bectu, says, "We will aim to cause the greatest amount of disruption possible to highlight our anger at the scale of job cuts and our concern about the effect these will have on the future of the BBC. We expect overwhelming support for the strikes and we hope the BBC will return to the negotiating table to discuss these unacceptable job cuts."
Because of the job cuts by the corporation (probably due to low ratings as a result of poor reporting) the BBC has decided to cut thousands of more jobs in departments ranging from marketing, finance, and now it seems the journalists themselves might even be threatened. The journalists plan on striking on May 23, May 31 and June 1 which is "seems odd" as one would consider strikes to go from one week to the next with no gaps.
Perhaps these journalists should reconsider starting a blog and if they are looking for work, Pajama's Media and Blogger News are now "hiring."
It looks like things could be getting worse for BBC.
As of now the BBC has not released the TV and radio schedules for the strike affected days but in case the strike does happen, the Chelsea Flower Show could be affected as it is slated to take place between May 23 to May 28. BBC One's Breakfast show, The Daily Politics, Wednesday's midweek lottery draw on BBC One and Working Lunch on BBC Two are the other shows that face disruption in the vent of the strike.
According to Earth Times, the unions are threatening to strike on another day, although that has not yet been confirmed. If any of the journalists decide to cross over into the blogosphere, they would find a lively community ranging from the looney left to the religious right (with other bloggers in the middle with some humor on the side).
A great example of an "MSM" blogger is Chris Lopez who is an editor for the Contra Costa Times. So Mr. and Mrs. soon-to-be-unemployed BBC reporter, what are you waiting for?
