South Koreans Angry At Japan
[Media Source*] Apparently the dispute is over a bunch of islands (is it me or does it seem like Asia is getting a little heated over there?). Japan passed a law claiming ownership of the islands sparking protests in South Korea who see the islands as rightfully theirs.
"I want to make clear that Shimane Prefecture's deplorable act has absolutely no impact on the fact that Tokto is our own sovereign territory," South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon said shortly before the vote.
"For our government, Tokto is our land historically, geographically and according to international law, and as much as we practically control the island, it is not an issue subject to diplomatic negotiations between South Korea and Japan," Ban added.
Japan declared a "Day of Tokto" to celebrate it's ownership of the islands, but
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lee Kyu-hyung added that South Korea would take necessary measures to protect its ownership of the islands.
"We make it clear that If Shimane prefecture does not immediately repeal the motion establishing the Day of Tokto, the government will take all necessary responses and the responsibility for any consequences rests entirely with the Japanese side," said Lee.
South Korea already has soldiers on the islands, which besides the soldiers remain uninhabited. Although I doubt war would break out over the islands (because Japan has a serious navy). Just in case the Reuters video is not showing you can view the news item over here.
