E.U. Getting Fat
[Media Source*] And I thought only Americans were getting fat.
An alarm bell was rung for 200 million people across the European Union (EU) on Tuesday (March 15). Obesity is reaching epidemic levels particularly amongst children and the EU joined forces with Europe's food industry to tackle the alarming rise.
The number of overweight schoolchildren in the EU is rising by some 400,000 a year, the Commission says. The problem is worst in southern Europe as traditionally healthy Mediterranean diets give way to processed foods richin fat, sugar and salt.
"Obesity is rising rapidly, and Europe's expanding waistlinebrings with it devastating consequences for public health and huge economic costs," EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said in a statement.
Look at all those kids eating all that yummy food (especially the little one eating that huge hamburger). Europe is trying to fight this problem though with education programs, although a good exercise would probably help them far more than "eating right."
Update: The Reuters link keeps "changing" on me. The title of the video is "EU Tackles Obesity" so you may have to just look for it.
