New Post may help NASA
[Media Source*] (FloridaToday.com) Representative Dave Weldon has won a new post which may help bolster NASA's financially as it was in a pathetic position when it came to congressional favor.
NASA had been just one of several independent, second-tier agencies lumped into the annual spending bill that funded the Veterans Affairs Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
NASA was forced to compete for funding with veterans and low-income housing programs, a contest the agency often lost.
In its new home, the space agency won't have to compete with federal programs that have an immediate impact on populations with strong champions in Congress.
This should be good...although Democratic Rep. David Obey seems at least to me to be whining about it. More below.
Putting Weldon in charge will be beneficial to NASA. NASA has often received the back burner when it comes to funding, and despite the increase in it's budget the Hubble telescope is doomed to die a pathetic death in the ocean after delivering stunning pictures to many people around the globe. Weldon seems eager to help NASA as he starts his new position saying:
"In this leadership role, I will have an even greater voice on issues important to my district -- including NASA,"
But despite this move (which should be good whether your a Democrat or Republican) Rep. David Obey sees this as a move to payback Tom Delay.
"Mr. DeLay has made clear by this action that while he earnestly demands that 434 other members of the House accept the consequences of fiscal discipline, there will be one exception," said Wisconsin Rep. David Obey, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.
Give me a break! NASA is long overdue for an increase as it has been treated like the "red-headed" step child for so long. If it were not for Tom Delay, NASA wouldn't had received an extra $1.1 billion for their budget allowing them to function somewhat adequately. Hopefully, this sentiment reflects that of Obey and not the rest of his party. Fortunately for space lovers out there, President Bush has been giving NASA a helping hand financially by increasing their budget, thereby speeding up the process towards (hopefully) colonization of the moon. Selah!
