Bush defends Rumsfeld...
[Media Source*] There seems to be outrage over the apparent lack of "feeling" that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld did not personally sign condolence letters to the families of U.S. troops killed in Iraq. Bush is known for personally signing letters such as these, and the apparent lack of Donald for doing so it causing outrage.

President George W. Bush gives a year-end news conference in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at the White House compound in Washington, December 20, 2004. Bush defended Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's handling of the Iraq war but acknowledged difficulties in training Iraqi police and army to take over the country's security so U.S. forces can return home.
In Reuters (see source link) Bush defended Rumsfeld.
"Sometimes, perhaps his demeanor is rough and gruff. But below that rough and gruff, no-nonsense demeanor is a good human being who cares deeply about the military and deeply about the grief that war causes," Bush said.
I personally think controversy with Rumsfeld is pretty much a "non-issue." It was a dumb mistake for Rumsfeld (who is a bright guy by the way) to not sign the letters but it is even dumber to call for his resignation. This is not your average CBS scandal here. This was a poorly made mistake by a public figure who has been "spanked" by the media for his error. To condemn him for it is one thing. To ask for his job is another. He is still much needed as Secretary of Defense and until the job is done in Iraq, Afghanistan, (future reference) Iran and North Korea all calls for his departure will be ludicrous. Selah.
