Hamas has mounted a desperate damage-limitation exercise after one of its units shot dead a 20-year-old Palestinian woman for "immoral behavior" as she enjoyed a day out with her future husband. [Source]
Ironically this never would have happened if Hamas had simply done a little "investigation" before proceeding with their "honor killings" (a horrible practice usually performed by the family members of the victim). The fiance of the victim, Ziad Zaranda, who saw his love killed right in front of him while they were in a taxi declared that "Hamas is worse than Israel, worse than Sharon"--which is a pretty strong statement coming from a Palestinian (whom last I recalled doesn't have a much favorable outlook on their Jewish neighbors).
According to some eyewitnesses, five gunmen in another car gave chase and shot Azzami (who was sitting in the front seat) killing her instantly. The Fiance as well as the sister were then brutally beaten in public view of the populace. What they did to the dead body next is something you would only expect from theocratic governments.
"It was the most horrific crime I've seen in my life," said a university student who witnessed the attack. "What they did to the body while it was lying on the ground was barbaric. This does not represent Islam." The student, who asked not to be named, said he and several other people at the scene were too afraid to interfere. "We waited until the gunmen left the area before we called the police and an ambulance," he added. [Source]
While the police and family demand an apology and arrest from the terrorists who carried out this incident unfortunately little restitution may come towards the families in this situation. Unless Abbas gets serious about reigning in these "renegade factions" more unlawful deeds such of these will continue. Unless their is public outrage over this brutal custom, such atrocities will continue to undermine the Palestinian women and unfortunately the rest of Palestinian society as well.
