Former Israeli President Dies
[Media Source*]
Former Israeli President Ezer Weizman has died. Mr. Weizman, who had recently suffered from a series of respiratory infections, is being remembered as a war hero and public servant who made an important contribution to Mideast peace.
Ezer Weizman was best known for playing an instrumental role in the 1979 Camp David Accords, the peace treaty with Egypt that was Israel's first with an Arab state. Mr. Weizman was a former air force commander who underwent a political transformation, from a hardliner to a dove who supported territorial compromise with the Palestinians.
Weizman was a man of peace who basically pursued the goal of a lasting peace in the region. He was a man ahead of his time who (when he was a Cabinet minister) met with the PLO when such contacts were illegal (and was later fired for it by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir). Although with all the complexities of the "holy land conflict" such pursuits of peace made him look naive, Weizman at least had the courage to back what he believed.
He later on became President having not only held a cabinent position but was a distinguish war hero as well. He was later on elected as the seventh President of Israel in 1993 but resigned in 2000 over allegations of him taking a large amount of money from a friend. Despite his tragic ending he will be remembered for his charm and wit. Shalom to his family.
